Philadelphia Unitarian Society of Humanists (P.U.S.H.)

P.U.S.H. is committed to the Humanist principles of reason, compassion, and human fulfillment enumerated in the Humanist Manifestos and in the Seven Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Goals

We seek to promote a broad acceptance of Humanism in our society, particularly throughout the UUA and its congregations and to provide an active interface between Unitarian Universalists and the secular community.  We represent Humanism in the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations and our group is comprised of members of the Unitarian Society of Germantown, however our meetings are open to everyone.

As Humanists we rely on reason and compassion rather than supernatural revelation, to guide us in our quest to become more fully human as individuals, develop a greater empathy with our fellow man and to cooperatively improve society.

Meetings

P.U.S.H. meets on the fourth Sunday of the month around 12:30PM at the Unitarian Society of Germantown.  The meetings run for approximately an hour and a half and begins with a check-in from the group’s members who can choose to spend a few moments sharing details about their lives.  P.U.S.H. is a discussion group, we can discuss that month’s suggested reading or any other topic the group is interested in entertaining.  We will also engage in “field trips” from time to time such as the Franklin Institute, Natural History Museum, Philadelphia Astrological Society, Mutter Museum, etc.  We will also hold movie nights where the group will select, watch and discuss a film of common interest.
