Racism Book/Study Group

7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

A new Racism Book/Study Group will begin July 11 at 7:30pm. It will generally meet monthly on second Wednesdays of the month except in the months the social justice potluck happens when we’ll move to first Wednesday and it will be first Wednesday in August. It will be sharing and listening until everyone has had a chance to share once and then discussion.  We will read UUs of Color (see below/link for more information) for the first meeting, followed by Centering and then likely move on to other books by people of color within and outside of UUism. Treva Burger will lead the group, contact her with questions or if you would like to buy a book from her, trevawb@gmail.com. There will be a couple of each book to loan.

All are welcome and asked to do the reading in advance.

Unitarian Universalists of Color: Stories of Struggle, Courage, Love and Faith (2017)

Yuri Yamamoto, Chandra Snell and Tim Hanami, editors

Members of Unitarian Universalist congregations are predominantly white, upper middle class and highly educated. People of color often feel marginalized in such settings despite the denomination’s interest in becoming more diverse. Yuri Yamamoto, Chandra Snell and Tim Hanami started a project to publish stories of Unitarian Universalists of color in an effort to lift up voices from the margins and to make our congregations more welcoming. Fifteen contributors share their stories of love, challenges, faith journeys, hope and despair. Also included is the transcript of a panel workshop based on the stories at the Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly in 2015. It can also be bought during Fellowship Hour, and at Lulu.com   A bulk order could be placed if there’s enough interest.
