Opportunities to Serve

The "Do Crew"
The Building & Grounds Committee is always looking for a few more handy and available (retired?) folks who would like to be part of a small projects group. The "Do Crew" meets
bi-weekly on a weekday for a couple of hours to tackle small repair and maintenance tasks.  Painting, weather stripping leaking windows and other limited scope repairs that our old building needs would be the target. The group is making a big difference, and we have some fun along the way! If you're interested, contact Scott Murray, fsmurray@alumni.cmu.edu

Calling All Tutors
There are few things in life more important than the education of our children. Unfortunately, kids in the Philadelphia public schools don't have the advantages of their counterparts in private or suburban schools. Over the years, many USGers have tutored dozens of students in math, reading and English at the Lingelbach School at Wayne and Johnson. Tutoring is not only important for the students--sometimes it is the difference between passing and failing a subject--it enables us to live out our UU principles. So please consider being a tutor at Lingelbach. You don't have to be a math whiz or an English major. Most of what we do is pretty basic. What we're really asking for is your time--as little as an hour a week, more if you can spare it--and a little patience. If you are interested, please contact Mary Kwartnik at Lingelbach, mkwartnik@phila.k12.pa.us to arrange a day and time. You can also contact Sam Gugino sam@samgugino.com for questions of information.

Videographers Needed for Events & Sunday Services
We are looking for volunteers to help us generate more video about our church, our exciting programs, and of the fabulous sermons we hear each week. No experience necessary! The camera is very user-friendly. If you are interested in joining our team of videographers, please contact Office Administrator Gloria Smith at admin@usguu.org. Visit www.usguu.org & http://www.youtube.com/user/usguutvto view our library of videos.

Still Looking for Ushers
We have a few more slots to fill for Ushers for Sunday Worship Services. In particular, we need people who can sign up for the 5th Sunday of the month (does not occur each month). Ushering is a great way to help the church while meeting newcomers and others attending on Sundays. To sign-up or for information, contact Steve Conrad conrdse@aol.com or Brian O'Leary bnol@verizon.net

Volunteer Sound Operators Needed

Our fabulous volunteer soundmen, Bob Williford and Bob
Munger, could use some help covering Sunday worship services and other events held at the church. If you are interested in training to become one of our sound engineers, please contact Bob Williford rbwilliford@gmail.com or Bob Munger trebor43regnum@hotmail.com (and your name does not need to be Bob!)

Memorial Garden Committee - helpers needed
The Memorial Garden Committee meets once a week (now it is on Wednesday morning  from 9:00 to 10:00 AM) during warm weather to do weeding and general upkeep of the memorial garden.
Additional helpers are solicited.... It's fun.   Give Tom Schoonmaker a call (215 844-2453) or email at schoonrt@verizon.net

Spirit of Life Shawl Ministry
Have you heard about our Spirit of Life Shawl ministry right here at USG?  We are knitting (or crocheting) prayer shawls for members of our congregation when they are in need of healing and hope.  Members create the shawls, making sure to say a simple wish, or blessing or UU prayer when beginning and ending the knitting session.  The shawls are then given to Kathy Bonanno who wraps them with a simple ribbon and attaches cards that explain the history of the shawl and name of the knitter.  Kent and members of the Caring Committee present the shawls during pastoral visits to members of our congregation who are sick, in hospice, suffering emotionally or in some other way in need of a warm and comforting spiritual "hug." Kathy Bonanno can provide simple instructions, recommended blessings, even yarn and needles if you need them.  This project might be especially appealing to newer members and those who aren't currently serving on committees.  For more info contact Kathy at poetrypug@netscape.com or 215-885-7447.
