Unitarian Society of Germantown
Different People, Different Beliefs, One Faith.
Thank you for choosing the Unitarian Society of Germantown for your child’s exploration of faith! This is a place where building community among families starts with a welcoming and nurturing environment for our children.
We offer developmentally appropriate and diverse Church School classes for all ages with special Sundays devoted to children’s chapel and social justice, so that children may learn how to live out their responsibility to others.
It promises to be another fun and eventful year. Thanks for joining us!
In Faith,
Erick DuPree,
Consulting Director of Faith Development
Every Sunday begins in the sanctuary, where children experience “what happens in the big room.” Children’s Chapel takes the spiritual experience deeper the first Sunday of the month. The third Sunday of the month is Social Justice Sunday, devoted to a partnership with USG’s Social Justice Committee.
The remaining church year is divided into Trimesters, of about six sessions meeting the second and fourth Sundays. This keeps volunteering meaningful but not a burden, as our volunteers are vital to the Sunday morning programs.
Lessons are easy to follow and easy to teach! Each grade has a tote bag, and all your supplies are provided for you. You literally just show up! With teacher support and orientation, our most valued and appreciated resource is the adult who commits time to our children’s spiritual growth.
We need people of all ages to assist with chapel, family fun, and social action events. Please be sure to indicate on the registration form how your family is willing to help. Religious Education for children and youth is a priority for our congregation and is funded through USG’s general operating budget.
IN OUR CLASSES:
Beginning the Year:
Due to renovation of the Sullivan Chapel, the first Trimester of RE will combine grades 2-5 in the dynamic Principle Parade, a hands-on learning collective that inspires children to work together as they learn their principles. Our other grades are outlined below.
PreK – 3* & 4 year olds *(d.o.b. before 9/1/08)
Sept-Dec Youth Lodge, Jan-June Sullivan Room 1
Celebrating Me and My World
Celebrating Me and My World provides preschoolers with opportunities to grow in their sense of trust and caring, to develop their self-identity and to deepen their connection with all life.
Grades K & 1: Wonderful Welcome
Sept-December Youth Lodge, Jan-June Sullivan Room 2
The Wonderful Welcome curriculum engages and challenges leaders and children alike to explore how and why we are willing to welcome others into our lives. We welcome not only strangers, but family, our peers, our neighbors and even entities that are not people such as our animal friends and nature itself.
Grades 2 & 3: Principle Parade; Sept-Dec Assembly Room
Faithful Journey: Jan-June Sullivan Room 3
Faithful Journeys equips our children with language and experiences to answer these questions and help them develop a strong Unitarian Universalist identity. Participants embark on a pilgrimage of faith, exploring how Unitarian Universalism translates into life choices and everyday action.
Grades 4-5: Principle Parade: Sept-Dec Assembly Room
Toolbox of Faith: Jan-June Committee Room
Toolbox of Faith invites participants to reflect on the qualities of our Unitarian Universalist faith, such as integrity, courage, and love, as tools they can use in living their lives and building their own faith. Each session uses a tool as a metaphor for an important quality of our faith such as reflection (a mirror), flexibility (duct tape), and justice (a flashlight).
Grades 6-7: Amazing Grace Daskam Room
Amazing Grace helps participants understand right and wrong and act on their new under-standing. The program points to Unitarian Universalist values as resources essential to their movement toward independence.
Grades 8-9: Off Site/Assembly Room
Coming Of Age: UU Heritage Coming of Age is a UU rite of passage, a time when teens bridge into the next phase of spiritual development; look deeply at UU values, are mentored by an adult about faith and create credos about what they believe.
Grades 9-12 Youth Group Fridays @ First Unitarian Church
YUUP, Young Unitarian Universalist of Philadelphia, provides youth from the three area congregations: First U, Germantown, and Restoration the opportunity to come together in an urban setting and create ministry. We meet together on Friday nights in Center City from 4:00-6, and foster opportunities to get involved in service projects, explore spirituality, and build community within the group and in the larger church community. Visit www.yuup.org for more details.
CHILDCARE (infants to age three)
Childcare is offered every Sunday in the Bristol Room below the sanctuary. Paid adult and youth staff offer nurturing care for our youngest children. Toys and books are provided. Please pick up a parent information sheet in the childcare room to find out more.
For babes in arms, and nursing parents the Wiggle Room is available outside the sanctuary. Please see an usher for details.
