January in Religious Education for Children and Youth!

Dear Family and Friends!

First, let me wish joy this New Year to you all.  January began on New Years Day with a dynamic Kwanzaa celebration with the incomparable Queen Nur, Yomi Awodesu, and Robert Anu.  Multicultural ministry is more than hosting cultural events; it is about service and deepening relationship with those whose traditions and culture are different.  We as UU’s are not trying to make Kwanzaa about us, but rather learn the valued lessons from Kwanzaa, community, peace, and commitment to our heritage.

This is the season of faith, Imani, as we learned with Queen Nur. This month our faith and light will continue to shine in Religious Education.  As some of you may know, our committee chair, Margaret Lea, has stepped out of leadership at USG to serve Buxmont UU as their interim accompanist. I am profoundly blessed to have served in leadership with her, and the committee and I are indebted to her generosity, dedication, and talents.  With that, the Religious Education Committee will be welcoming Jenn Leiby and Susan Smith to join our team starting in January.  Please welcome them into leadership as we do.

  • January 8th all children are invited to participate in the Jazz Funeral, an upbeat time when our gathered community joins in burying our past year and welcoming with renewed hope the New Year!

  • January 15th    All children will break into classes, continuing with the theme of the month, Our Living Faith. Classes will be held in the Sullivan Chapel for grades PreK, K1, and 2nd-3rd.
  • January 16Th   Martin Luther King Day of Service! Many wonderful activities are being planned for children. Please visit the website at:  www.mlkphillyuus.org and sign up today! Some volunteer spaces are limited.
  • January 22th   Social Justice Sundays are in full swing!  In this season of cold, children from USG and neighboring UU congregations will be making fleece scarves for those in need! They will be donated to the Broad Street Ministry in Center City!
  • January 29th   All children will attend classes per schedule.

In this season of light, may faith in peace bless you!

In Faith,

Erick
