Authentic Selves Book Discussion Group

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Authentic Selves is a compilation of life stories and portraits of trans and nonbinary people, as well as of their partners, parents, children, siblings, and chosen family members. Through interviews and photo portraits, the subjects of Authentic Selves invite readers into their real lives–their revelations, challenges, joys, and networks of support. It is the 2024-25 UUA Common Read.

USG will host an in-person book discussion across four Mondays: February 10 & 24, March 10 & 24. The discussions will be held in the Sullivan Chapel from 7 to 8:30pm.

You don’t need to have read the whole book before we meet, though it would be good to have read some of the stories. For those of you who haven’t had a chance to get a copy of the book yet, you should be fine for the 1st session but should read some of the stories by the 2nd session (February 24).

If you identify as trans, non-binary and/or gender non-conforming, please let Margaret know at the email address below. Some of the stories and discussion may be uncomfortable or even re-traumatizing. The UUA’s curriculum has suggestions for the leader for providing extra support.

Copies of Authentic Selves are available (for purchase at $18 or on a sliding scale) even if you can’t come to the book discussion. Contact Margaret Thompson at CommonRead@usguu.org if you would like a copy, if you have questions and/or you want to participate.
