In 1977, the UUA General Assembly unanimously passed the Women & Religion Resolution, calling on all individual UUs and UU organizations to examine and put aside sexist assumptions, attitudes, and language; to explore and eliminate religious roots of sexism in myths, traditions and beliefs. The 1986 ten-session course “Cakes for the Queen of Heaven” by the Reverend Shirley Ann Ranck was a product of this Resolution.

In August of 2020, USG celebrated the 100th anniversary of the XIX Amendment giving U.S. white women the right to vote (women of color were not included until 1965). The women who developed the celebration understood that “the struggle isn’t over.” The celebration developers were reminded of “Cakes.” To that end, USG womyn course leaders Jeanne Allen, Susan Bockius, Donya Coldwell, Andrea Durham, Lisa Dutton, and Gale Gibbons set about updating the 2006 book by Rev.  Ranck modeled on her original course. Several of the leaders had taken the course in the 1990’s and found its effect life-changing.

The leaders now seek to empower a new generation to continue the work of eradicating sexism and the paradigms of patriarchy through the reclamation of female power and the creation of braver new individuals and communities. We invite you to the challenge.

Sessions will take place on most third Tuesdays over the coming year, into January 2022. We will meet via Zoom and, when possible, in person. See schedule below.
