This year’s annual meeting is set for Sunday, May 20 at 12:00pm. In addition to the election of the 2018-2019 Board members and Nominating Committee members, the board will present the congregational awards for 2017-2018 and give updates on other church news.
The 2017-18 Nominating Committee presents the following slate of nominees:
- Board of Trustees Nominees for three-year terms (2018-2021) are Nancy Anderson, Helena Showell and Sam Stormont. (Biographies are included below)
- Nominating Committee, Nominees for three-year terms (2018-2021) are Shobhi Kanal and Howard Silver (Biographies are included below)
Pursuant to our bylaws, Article III, Section 4: In addition to the nominees put forth by the Nominating Committee, any member may propose a nominee by giving written notice to the Secretary of that proposed nomination not less than twenty-five days before the scheduled Annual Meeting (April 25). The nominee must also provide a statement that they are willing to serve.

Nominee Biographies
Nancy Anderson – Nancy Anderson has been a member of USG since March 1979! She has served in many roles and capacities over the years. Most recently, Nancy has been deeply involved in the work of our Ending Racism Committee (ERC – former chair) and with CAMI (Citizens Against Mass Incarceration).
Helena Showell – I started attending USG in September 2014 and have been a member since October 2015. I have served as Worship Associate since September 2016. Being Worship Associate is a passionate ministry for me! My husband, Allen, and I live in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. We have three adult daughters, Bethany, Alyson, and Carole. My daughter, Alyson and I own an online herbal tea business, risingdawnteas.com. I hold an MFA in Media Design. I’m also a writer, photographer, graphic designer, and illustrator. I enjoy nature walking and observing plants and animals. I enjoy reading, crocheting, gardening, baking bread and other pursuits.
Sam Stormont – Sam began attending USG in 1993 when his children were young and became a member in 1997. He was an RE (now Child Spiritual Development) teacher for several years and served as RE chair. He also served on the Board about 15 years ago and has been a member of the Nominating committee. In addition, he has been active on the Service Auction committee for a long time and has served as Auction co-chair for the past several years. Sam will be retiring this summer and is looking forward to contributing to the life of the USG community.
Shobhi Kanal – Shobhi Kanal is a clinical social worker and psychotherapist who joined USG in 2014. She is a member of the Ending Racism Committee and UUPLAN, serves as an usher, and facilitates a Small Group Ministry.
Howard Silver I joined in 1991, was property (Buildings and Grounds) chair for 15 years, taught UU101 for 5 years, and have served on Personnel and other committees as well as the Nominating Committee and the architectural Master Plan Implementation Committee in the past.
