The joyful service of MLK Day

Each January, USG honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by putting his call to service into action. Our Day of Service brings several hundred volunteers of all ages together to complete meaningful projects for community organizations across our area. It is one of the most joyful days of our year, and everyone is welcome to take part.

What we do

Every year looks a little different, but our projects always meet real needs for our community partners. In past years, volunteers have:

  • Prepared food and meals, from soup and baked treats to bagged lunches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and snack bags
  • Made birthday cards and seasonal decorations
  • Painted rooms and hallways for organizations that needed a refresh
  • Cleaned up outdoors, picking up litter and tending gardens
  • Sanitized playrooms and organized closets and storage indoors
  • Advocated for justice by writing to elected officials and taking part in demonstrations

Volunteer with us. Everyone is welcome, and there is a project for every age and ability. Check back here in December to see this year’s projects and sign up.

Request a project for your organization. If your organization would like to receive service from us, please reach out with your ideas. We are especially looking for projects we can do at your location.
