Volunteer for the Rebuilding Together Philadelphia Philly Block Build!

8:30 am - 4:00 pm

We need you!

RTP Team USG’s 8th volunteer weekend is coming up Friday –Sunday, April 6, 7, 8 in West Philadelphia. The workdays will be from 8:30—4 pm.  You can volunteer for one, two or all three days.  We need people with some construction skills or semi-skills, as well as unskilled but enthusiastic people to paint, haul trash, etc. Anyone 14 years and up can help. Eli Scearce is our skilled captain.

This block build will be USG’s 8th year of sending a team to rehab a house for a low income home-owner. Rebuilding Together Philadelphia targets low income neighborhoods for intense renovation efforts.  Many volunteer groups come out to work on 20-some houses in an area of a few blocks.  So the renovation efforts really make a difference and improve things for everyone on the blocks.

Here is a 3-minute video of a homeowner talking about what the block build is like.

We are working again in Belmont (West Philly) this year.  Over the years we have been paired up with homeowners in many neighborhoods including Latino North Philly, Germantown, Logan and Mantua and Belmont. We have heard our neighbors’ stories.  We have learned what repairs they feel would most improve their homes and worked along side them to carry out these projects.

We have been moved by the resilience of people whose life chances have been diminished by race and class and education, but who nevertheless, create families and communities of hope and determination.

To indicate your interest in volunteering, send an email to Linda Bernstein at momberner506@gmail.com.  You can learn more about Rebuilding Together Philadelphia at their website http://www.rebuildingphilly.org

Rebuilding Together Philadelphia is the Share the Plate Recipient for March.  Although the labor is donated, RTP must pay for the materials we use and the expenses of their small staff.  USG has generously supported RTP in the past.  RTP needs our financial support more than ever this year.  The Share the Plate appeal will be Sunday March 18
