So Many Ways To Meet The Spirit!
All workshops run concurrently; please choose one
Spirit in Music: The USG Wannabe Choir – Sanctuary – Mark Daugherty
A workshop for all those frustrated vocalists who wannabe in the regular choir but have time constraints or think they can’t sing well enough (wrong!) or have just been too shy. Our talented maestro will warm up your voices and teach you a few songs which will then be part of our special Community Day service.
Spirit in Sound: Sacred Drumming – Youth Lodge – Bill Marconi
Drums have been a central part of prayers, worship and ceremonies from time immemorial. Come and feel how the magic of the rhythms still can touch the soul and bring the drummers into a special kind of union. Drums provided or BYOD. Drummers will then lead a procession into and play in our special Community Day service.
Spirit in Word: Poetry – Daskam Room – Mer Helferty
In complement to our theme “We Are In This World Together” in community, unity and family, bring your favorite poems to share and come prepared to compose your own poem(s) under the guidance of an experienced teacher and with the energy and spirit that arises in the group. No writing experience necessary. One or more of the poems from this workshop will then be shared in our special Community Day service.
Spirit in Movement: Yoga – Sullivan 1 and 2 – Richard Clarey
Listen to the Spirit in the body as you are led through the gentle poses of Hatha yoga, using props as necessary to enable you to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old. Wear loose clothes, and bring a blanket and yoga mat if you have such.
Spirit in Silence: Meditation – Sullivan 3 – Stephanie Bonner
Sit comfortably on a pillow or chair for some gentle guidance in the methods of mindfulness meditation and then during silence to experience each moment of presence. Short reading and discussion and, weather permitting and if all so choose, perhaps some walking meditation outside.
Spirit in Play: Stories and Kites for Children – Assembly Room (K-4th) and Committee Room (PreK) – Georganne Hardin-Fong and Stephanie Shenck
This workshop on kite-making will be offered in two locations. The PreK children will be in the committee room and will be led by Stephanie Shenck. The K-4th graders will be in the Assembly Room and led by Georganne, the “Storybook Fairy.” This activity will combine “story time” with kite-making, making this workshop a nice balance of quiet listening time and active creative time.
Spirit in the Kitchen: Bread Baking for Youth (5th-12th grade) – Kitchen – Christine Ginsburg
Children and youth will be guided through prepping and baking bread, which can be taken home and shared with their families. This workshop is also a great opportunity for youth to connect with their peers outside of class.
Although all workshops are open to all ages, parents should exercise their best judgment in allowing children to participate in the more adult-oriented workshops.
- 10:30 – 11:30am – Intergen Worship Service – “We Are In This World Together” – Many of the workshop participants will be integrated into the service.
- 11:30am – 12:30pm – Pancake Brunch served by Carl Leiby & Crew
